While married to the first of her six husbands, an arms manufacturer, film star Hedy Lamarr gained a technical education. In 1942, with George Antheil, she patented the “Secret Communication System.” Their early version of frequency hopping technology used a piano roll to change between 88 frequencies and was intended to make radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. The idea was controversial and ahead of its time and technology, and was not implemented until 1962, when it was used by U.S. military ships during a blockade of Cuba.
